Allegiant Airlines Delays Flight As Long As It Would Take Most Passengers To Drive To Destination

An Allegiant Air flight took off more than 11 hours behind schedule Monday night for an hour-and-a-half trip -- with many steaming passengers on board.

Flight 1032 was supposed to take off from Oakland International Airport for Provo, Utah at 9:30 a.m. local time, airport spokesperson Brian Kidd tells CBS News.

But it had to be towed back to the terminal due to a nose gear steering issue, and all passengers had to head back into the terminal.

Allegiant flew in a replacement craft that was slated to leave at 4 p.m. but it, too, had a mechanical problem.

So Allegiant flew in a third plane, which got to the airport at 6:40 p.m., Kidd says

I travel from Cleveland to North Carolina periodically. Typically, the flight is delayed 2 or more hours. The problem is, they don't announce the delay until about 1-1/2 hour before the flight. That is too close to call to wait before going to the airport.

What is door to door?

Leave your house or office, drive to the airport: 20 min to 1 hr depending on where you live.

Park the car, take the shuttle to the terminal: 20 min

Check-in, security, 30 min.

Boarding wait, including delay: 30 min to 3 hrs.

Travel: 1 hr.

Disembarking the plane, pick up luggage: 20 min

Catch shuttle to rental car, process through rental company: 45 min

Drive to the final destination: 2 hrs

Total travel time by air: 5 hr 45 min to 8 hrs.

Drive time from Cleveland to North Carolina: 8 hrs. And no hassle with the luggage, security or gate agents and flight attendants.
