Men who reportedly sailed bathtub down Fraser River made "bad decision": coast guard
The call came in to the coast guard around 9:20 p.m. Sunday night from a passing boater who claimed he saw a couple of men sailing off of Steveston in a bathtub.
The middle-aged men had a sail, a bailer and life jackets and seemed intent on sailing from the south arm of the Fraser River out into the Strait of Georgia, up past the Coast Guards hovercraft base on Sea Island and into the north arm of the river.
Despite the initial report, the hovercraft arrived around 10:05 p.m. to find that the two men were traveling in a seven-foot (2.1 m) fibreglass boat, according to Capt. Colin Henthorne.
They werent in distress, but a boat that size, under sail in the dark, in a place where deep sea ships routinely travel? They just werent prepared with that kind of vessel, Henthorne said Monday morning from Victorias Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
