Administrative error leads to extra spring break vacation for 659 Richmond schools employees

The omission of a single word in the Richmond Public Schools calendar is giving hundreds of city school system employees an extra week of vacation.
All 659 year-round employees for the district about 15 percent of the total workforce are getting paid time off next week for spring break, something they previously didnt get but are now because of an administrative error.
The 2018-19 school calendar approved by the city School Board omitted the word designated from the legend of the calendar. The legend, a district spokeswoman said, should have said Denotes Holidays/District Closure for Students and Designated Staff.
Those designated staff members are teachers and those in several other positions who dont work year-round. Without designated in the legend, the implication was that the division is/was closed, spokeswoman Kenita Bowers said.
Superintendent Jason Kamras said Wednesday that employees, operating under the assumption that they had the time off because of the lack of clarity on the calendar, had made plans with their families for spring break. ... We felt it was important to honor that, Kamras said.
