You know, I'm so envious of Democrats in deep blue areas...

Ok ok, I get it, not everyone in the US loves President Obama. Not everyone liked FDR. I can accept that. What's hard to accept is minding my own business and not bringing up politics or his name, and trying to get along with people like my neighbor, who brought his name up out of the blue. WTF. I'm trying hard to get along with this man, and he brings up President Obama, in a negative way. He saw quickly I did not agree by my facial expression, and changed the subject. Smart man, in this instance.

Go Prez ! Go Dems ! GOTV 2014 !

Maybe someday, those of us here in the Pacific Northwest will finally establish the Republic of Cascadia. And then we'll have a deep-blue country!

Cascadia! Long May You Rain!

and it's hugely Democratic. People only get annoyed at Obama when he says stupid stuff like Medicare and Social Security cuts are on the table. This is a poor state with low wages and people know pretty much that all they'll have when they get too old or sick to work is Social Security.

Once in a while I'll shop in the Republican walled McMansion ghetto and some blowhard will buttonhole me. If subtlety doesn't work, I give him "the face." Works every time.

even though most of the violent crime happens in the "good" parts of town. Republican door to door buttonholers give us a very wide miss.

Reddest damned part, too. The people that know me are respectful or will start with light-hearted sarcasm. I've had very few that actually pushed me to my limit.

At least, that's what I'm told. If someone wants to start up a conversation about our President, they'd better come prepared.

I don't probably already know. I was stuck there 8 years. Only part I could stand was from Williams north. Although the Pines, an authentic blues roadhouse on the north edge of Prescott, offered some relief. If you're a blues fan and lived near there or around Phoenix, you've doubtless heard of JD Simo. Good kid, stunning genius singer/guitarist who took up the study of classical guitar somewhere around age 5 or 6.

I still ran away full speed ASAP, though.

And where did I land? In a remote corner of the great blood-red Midwest. Maybe out of the frying pan into the fire in many ways. But this is where I could afford a house on a big lot. That's just the way it goes. Every other person seems involved with the alleged 'patriot' gang, and they get mad as hell when I call them that too.

Oh well. Challenge makes us grow. I'll be a giant by the time I die! fyi, I'm only 5' right now. The first several years there was a concerted effort to ... umm ... encourage me to relocate. But now they've given up the effort if not the wish. When I wonder if I might've been able to do more to pacify them, I remember what Malcolm X said: It's futile to desire brotherhood with those who don't want you for a brother.

If I woke up tomorrow in a deep blue state, I'd fall on my knees and kiss the ground. I know I have at least a few sympathizers here because on rare occasions I'll get a surreptitious thumbs-up after sending one of my letters to the paper, or even an unsigned congratulatory post card. One thing's funny, though; the local assessor, lifelong Republican though he is, treats me better than he treats most people! It's nothing personal, I guarantee you. Sometimes I wonder if he's one of those secret sympathizers. On a year when most other properties got a big tax hike which made him the most hated man in the county, mine enjoyed a precipitous drop.

If I had cable or satellite I'd be the world's biggest Portlandia fan, most definitely. Satire, true; but affectionate.

Where I am has few services either, and law enforcement's a big joke. Most of us are poor as church mice. The one and only advantage this place has over many others is that every climate model I've seen projects us as one of the more livable (if you stretch the term) places for the next 50-100 years. The wet places will get wetter and the hottest places will get hotter. We're already well out of our comparatively mild drought for several years and far ahead of average rainfall already. Plus I made sure to find somewhere 850' above sea level and at least 300' above the nearest river. Even though we're in Tornado Alley, this particular spot has never taken a hit because of the dramatic change in topography. Twisters bear down on us often enough but the sharp demarcation seems to fend them off.

I hope to live long enough to see the state turn blue again as it once was a real stronghold. Trying to do my best to keep chipping away at it. Don't hold your breath, but do wish us luck.

know any Republicans in RL. I probably came across some unknowingly before, but nobody I know personally now is a Republican (unless they've been extremely quiet about it).
