"WASHINGTON — Major Stephen Snyder-Hill found himself at the center of the national debate over the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell” when he was booed by audience members at a a September 2011 Republican presidential debate when he asked about the change that allows him now to serve his country and talk openly about his husband, Joshua.

Two years later, in a sign of the changed landscape for same-sex couples, Stephen and Joshua Snyder-Hill went to the Defense Supply Center, Columbus, or DSCC, in Ohio on Tuesday — where Joshua became “official,” as Stephen put it, and received his spousal military ID card on the first day the cards were available to same-sex spouses.

“I’ve been in the military for 24 years. I was pre-‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ during and after. It’s just been a really long fight, I think, for [same-sex couples’] military families to be able to get the same protection that other soldiers’ families get,” Stephen Snyder-Hill told BuzzFeed Tuesday afternoon. “I mean, we’ve had times when we’ve had family days, things that just beat down your morale because you just feel like you’re not the same or you’re not equal or you’re not protected as well. And I think that now, we’re pretty much equal.”

This has been such a long hard fought battle and it's heartwarming to be able to celebrate something so wonderful that has come to be for our Gay Brothers and Sisters in the Military.

This country has reached a milestone. Equality and the right to pursue happiness.

“It is now the Department’s policy to treat all married military personnel equally,” Hagel wrote in the memorandum. Specifically, he added, “The Department will continue to recognize all marriages that are valid in the place of celebration,” which means that it is not necessary that the state or country where a service member is stationed recognize same-sex couples’ marriages in order for the Pentagon to recognize the marriage.

Because much of the country does not allow same-sex couples to marry, however, Hagel wrote, the Pentagon has decided to allow service members in same-sex relationships living in such places “non-chargeable leave for the purpose of traveling to a jurisdiction where such a marriage may occur.”

Often been said by folks plenty smarter than yt that so long as one person's not free, nobody's free.

(Slightly off topic but still pertinent: with all the internet connection problems I've had using off-site wi-fi, and how terribly behind it put me in my reading, I've decided that if I ever get so far behind again I'll go to the library and use their computers for DU. I absolutely hate being so far behind. Might miss something. Besides, people looking over my shoulder will be seriously pissed that I'm using THEIR library for such horrible purposes!)

As it is at home right now, I seem to spend half my time waiting for pages to load or connections to reset, etc. Believe me, this does not represent 'free' internet service. I'm paying double for it in frustration. But for now there's nothing I can do about it. Have to save up $ for more home repairs in the coming winter season when help's cheaper. At some point I'll flip out and re-up, but for now frugality rules.)

When at the library I'll keep this particular thread ready to bring forward when I sense anyone lurking. They'll be so pissed! Funny thing is, the gossip mongers here can't seem to decide exactly what or who I am or am not, so they just throw everything at me, hoping something will stick. If I turned out to be Mother Theresa they wouldn't like that either. No pleasing some people.

I'm sorry about your 'puter internet problems. That drives me crazy when anything takes a long time to download. Spoiled rotten!

It's my actual laptop that needs work and I'm taking it in tomorrow for my computer doc to have a look at. Fingers crossed it's not expensive.

I waited to take it tomorrow instead of this weekend like he requested because the Library is open and if I need to do anything online.. I can use theirs. It's just two blocks from home.

Thankfully, there's never anyone looking over our shoulders at our Library!

8. Well, I know my laptop's not the problem

I keep it lean, clean, and mean. Also didn't have this problem when I had my own internet service. But for now I'm glad for what I've got.

Love my library too, even though we can't have email there. Mine's also only 2 blocks from home. Part of the problem with going there more than once a month to catch up on the newspapers is the fact that I have to put Brigid and Molly in the house. They have terrible separation anxiety, and I feel guilty for leaving them.

This afternoon, however, I volunteered at the Clothes Closet with a couple friends, so it was a worthwhile outing. Spent $3.40 while I was at it, but all clothing is only 10 cents! Brigid has already shredded all her bedding, so I just brought home cheap sweaters to line their suitcase half shells.

But I digress. Once again, I'm so proud of and happy for our gay service men and women. It's about time they got a fair shake.
