I need help in setting up my cable connection on ubuntu 10.10

I'm trying to set up my internet so I can use my cable internet which I just had installed friday and haven't been able to get online yet. I called help desk and they said they couldn't help me it was up to me to set it up on my computer, the modem shows its online. My modem is a motorola sb5100

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

3. I'm not sure where the network connection settings are in Ubuntu 10.10

I'm using Linux Mint 12 now.

On my system it's in the Settings menu -> Network Connections. The cable modem should show as a Wired connection. Select "edit" and under IPv4 settings - "Method" should be set to "Automatic (DHCP)"

This tells the computer to get the network settings from the cable modem.

5. Here is a setup for Ubuntu 10.04, should be similar for you.

From the "System" menu select "Preferences" then go down and click on "Network Connections." From that popup click on "Wired" and then on "Auto Ethernet."

Then click on "Edit" on the right. From that popup click on "Connect automatically." MAC address is blank. For MTU automatic is selected.

Then click on 802.1x Security. Box is not checked. Then, click on "IPv4 Setting." The Method selected is Automatic (DHCP). DHCP client ID is blank.

Click on IPv6 Settings. Set for Ignore. IPv6 is not used everyplace yet, so IMO leave IPv6 Setting as Ignore.

Is it something I have to do here or is it something that they have to do there? There being at the cable terminal/office

Something like that if not exactly that. It's at your end. You should take a look at the cable modem status page ( probably http://192.168.100.1/ ), which is where you would check to see if it is providing DHCP services. (DHCP == Dynamic Host Control Protocol).

There will be a configuration page, but the only thing I can do there is restart the modem. I would expect DHCP to be on at the modem, since I have no way to turn it off.

I run Ubuntu. My menu bar has a little icon on it - that looks like two electric plugs stuck together - that runs a script called "auto etho" which configures my wired net automatically if DHCP is set up.

9. I can't even go to the modems setup page now

when I could it was so slow to come up that it was all but useless. The tech guy called me yesterday afternoon and said he would be bringing me another modem as he thinks thats where my problem is. Thanks for the help
