Why should I care about Growl?

Since I updated to Lion, I've gotten this regular irritating update-to-growl notification on my desktop: Growl wants me to toss $2 at them thru the app store to upgrade to Growl 1.3.3 or something like that, and I can't figure out why I should

I finally went into system prefs and clicked the Growl icon to open Growl prefs and unchecked Growl under apps. Will this make the frickin update-to-growl notification eat-shizz-and-die?

Its kind of a minor luxury third party item.

Apple has built its own version into Mountain Lion, so there will be no begging.
