Since iPod memory isn't as large as your Mac, songs, lectures, etc. that you don't want to hear on the go. leave them unchecked.

I have over 100g in iTunes on my iMac, but only 8g on my nano. So I made playlists of just what I want on the go; or to help me sleep if there's some noise poliution.

Edtit: This also is important to designate items for your iPod from your podcasts, audiobooks and movies.
