Can anyone recommend an ad blocker?

One that runs on iMacs?

Things are out of control with the auto-load ads and videos.

It worked on Safari, but I had to give up Safari -- couldn't update on this iMac.

It's an ancient, dying technology that fuels ads. Even Adobe (its owner) is winding it down.

If you really need Flash to watch a video once in a while, download Chrome (Flash built in) and use it specifically for that purpose.

I highly recommend uBlock Origin for Firefox. It has the lowest memory and CPU footprint of any adblocker. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?src=ss

I'm the kind who is somewhat willing to live with ads but if they're not willing to let me set it so I don't see assholes in the ads I receive then the hell with it, I'll just block all of them.
