Need help figuring out why my audio died.
It's a machine I built myself. Asus P5KPL MB, 2.2G Dual core processor, 2G RAM, 500G SATA HD, ATI Rage 5700 video running XP Pro. The MB had on board sound but it died a couple of years ago. Considering that the on board sound didn't play nice with an old game app I put in a Creative SB audio card. It worked fine since then but died last night. I pulled the sound card and tried it in another machine and it works fine. Took the sound card from the other machine that was confirmed working and still no sound. I did a system restore to a few days ago to see if was a software corruption but still no joy. The MB only has one PCI slot so I can't move the card to another slot. Is it likely or common that the PCI slot or controller would fail? The video card is PCIe. If the controller for PCI com went south wouldn't it affect the video or are they separate controllers?

(45,851 posts)But in a similar situation of dead audio I have used a cheap USB audio card and just plugged my speakers/whatever into that.

(4,452 posts)I had thought about a usb audio adapter. It would work in a pinch or as a back up. I'd much rather keep the old hardware working as long as possible but I may be doomed to rebuild sometime soon.

(3,655 posts)Windows sometimes loses track of things. Another thought - make sure the onboard is disabled in the bios.

My computer is also having the same issue not picking up my wireless headset audio translation signal. I have downloaded and re-installed the drivers many of times, maybe my sound card cannot handle my new Plantronics W740? Please help.....

(26,549 posts)If uses bluetooth or USB, it won't be using the sound card at all. In that situation, the headset will be a new audio device, and you'll need to change the setting in the audio control panel to use it.

(26,549 posts)I've had mine switch to a different device.
(Aside from the usual troubleshooting that I'm assuming you did - cable's plugged in, speakers are powered on, speakers work with another audio device, etc.)
