This indeed seems to have gone away with 26.0. Unclear why, but the internet is abuzz with it.

You can still access your downloads, throught the Library window by clicking on the downward pointing arrow in the top right of the toolbar, or by pressing CTRL-J.

I'm hoping they bring the download status bar back with a v26.1.

I located the replacement "download status bar" and installed it. It is less than the manager had been but will suffice.

I'm afraid the download arrow is here to stay.

You get used to it. It has a little progress bar underneath with time remaining until completion. Clicking on the arrow gives you download speed while the download is still running. After completion you have to do as you say and open the popup window to see your full list of downloads.
