printer for Ubuntu Mint

I know just enough about computers to show that I obviously am not an expert. Do current plug and play printers and scanners work with Ubuntu, or just a few? Do I need drivers?
Also, why doesn't the web cam work with Yahoo IM, but will with Google Voice? Will it work with Skype?
There is no way I'm going back to Windows.

..most printer makers have Linux PPD s avail online. Works pretty slick most times. Here is a link..
