tablet to replace laptop?

My 6 yr old faithful laptop has finally kicked the cyber bucket. Since now i only need a computer for the web, to play simple games at times and to chat, would a tablet be able to replace a lop top? I need to use word processor and only occasionally a simple version of excel. Any advice please from you nice people?

1. I would just get another laptop which is much easier for word processing and excel.

Low end laptops are still cheaper than comparable tablets.

3. Tablets are useless for any real work.

The touchscreen keyboard is a major PITA. Any typing longer than a short text message becomes difficult-especially if you have to use symbols, numbers, or switch between upper and lower case.
I use mine as a book reader more than anything else.

4. Go with a laptop. Cheaper and has a keyboard. Tablets aren't even close to "there" yet.
