I finally got a wireless usb modem! 2 questions
I have been playing around for a week or so with my new toy. I'm getting 3MB or so out here (I know that probably seems slow to a lot of people, but 10 + years of 24 K has been the norm for me)
I am not getting enough data for the $$$ and probably won't keep it, but I will play for a couple of months. One of my little minor irritations is this: Not always, but often enough it makes me kind of grrrrr, the system pops up and tries to dial the dial-up connection. Usually when I open a new page that probably isn't already cached, I am not quite sure the exact trigger as it is a bit erratic. It especially happens when I go to watch a you tube clip or there is a pop-up box to fill in (for example paying a bill online). Is there a way to make it stop doing that? I don't want to eliminate the settings as I am using it most of the time - the wireless is getting maybe an hour a day, the dial-up most of the rest of the time I am on-line.
oh this is on a laptop, with an external dial-up modem and the problem happens even when the modem is not physically connected to the computer. windows 7, firefox, blah blah - what else?
2nd question (maybe related to the video thing) I noticed when I try to open a DU page with a video on it the whole system hangs for a minute, even worse trying to navigate away from such a page...it seems much worse this morning after a flash update, but it was doing it before too. after a video plays the cursor become ineffective for a little while and if I try to go back with a backspace or arrow everything just hangs. If I get impatient and start clicking too many things (minimize or close windows, switch tabs) they will all happen at once after the hangup stops...all this stuff is slower on teh "fast connection" than on dial up. what is going on?

(7,242 posts)Start up Internet Explorer (never mind if you never usually use it - this setting affects any browser you use).
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections, and make sure there's a checkmark against "Never dial a connection," then hit OK. That should fix it.
To re-enable dialup, just remove the checkmark.
