Question about using an external microphone.

I want to get a decent external microphone to record flute playing. I've gotten good advice from a flute player who has created a lot of tutorials on YouTube about this. So I'm looking for a "ribbon" or "dynamic" mic. I find a lot of them, but they don't seem to come with a cable that would plug into the mic socket on my laptop. Do I get my own cable? Some, at least, come with an XLR cable.

That's how I have my rig for recording, with a Shure plugged into a Mobile Pre, and the Mobile Pre making the connection to the desktop computer.

Then you can use a free editing program like Audacity or a more specific recording/editing suite to deal with your files.
