How many MB? KB? in an average size email message?

I need to buy an international data plan for a trip. The one for my iPad is $25 for 50 MB of data. Assuming an email has, let's say, 1000 characters and a small jpg for some company logo. How big is that?

I am just looking for a gross estimate.

maybe 4-6 thousand. If the logo is just a few colors, maybe less. BlueJazz Jun 2012 #1

About 91KB per email.

16KB for a logo the size of DU's in JPEG format.
75KB for the Email content since most emails are in HTML format and email header

You may want to see if your email app can download headers only unless you open the email. This will cause a pause when loading the email to retrieve the contents, but it will allow you to filter the content prior to downloading it.

Another thing you can do is use Open WiFi hotspots and connect to your email server with an SSL connection for encryption to keep prying eyes from stealing your password.

Go into your Mail, Calender settings and turn off the following...
Remote Images = off
Email Preview = off

That will display the Sender (From) and Subject of the email... Effectively, Headers Only.
The email will only get downloaded if you open it.
That should drastically reduce your bandwidth usage while communicating through your email app.

It monitors and alerts you of your data usage. This way you won't end up as one of those $200,000 data usage stories you hear about every so often.

There are a lot of variables that impact the overall size of a message. If you're in doubt, go with the next higher plan. For simple text with a "small" JPG, 50MB should handle around 4-5 hundred messages. There's a lot of baggage that tags along in the header and other overhead.
