Usual fixes are not working.

I'm helping a friend with an XP computer that is giving him fits. Mainly, the problem is that Explorer files don't open and Microsoft Word commands don't go through without repeated clicking and a LOT of waiting. Web surfing was originally slow also, but after running Superantispyware and Malwarebytes and taking off a mess of adware, it seems much better now.

It is very frustrating to click on a folder repeatedly and have nothing happen until the ninth or tenth click. I don't think it's the mouse, since we can navigate the internet now.

Any ideas what this could be, or where I should start in fixing it? I have also run CCleaner and removed some unnecessary files from startup, but I can't seem to fix this thing...

It seems to be helping.

I went to SourceForge and got an open source replacement.

Here's a link.

I've been using it about a week, seems to be solving the problem.

although you're probably right that it's a good idea.

The problem with Explorer is so significant that I was looking for a broader solution first.

Thanks for the input.

At the run command type: sfc /scannow

You will need the xp disc if any files are damaged

I ran chkdsk /r, and it didn't help. I didn't realize system file check even existed. I will try it when I get over there again if he has the XP disk. I hope he does.

Appreciate this very much.
