A20m ThinkPad going again but ...
I got this laptop going again (needed a new modem).
I ran a bunch of checks, test, cleaners, etc. on it. It had 901 registry errors that I cleaned off with Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.
However, I also managed to delete Iomega whatever that was once used for.
When the system boots up (Windows 2000 is the OS) it says that Iomega Active Disk not available and it was to be used with disks ... obviously this old ThinkPad is very old but heh, it works!). When I check the control panel, I see it there and have the box checked that says DISABLE on it. However, I still get the prompt when the system boots up.
Otherwise this 12 year old ThinkPad is running pretty good, all 6 GB of it!
Does this matter?
If so, please advise.
P.S.I saved a fortune by working this little old laptop over (cost for new modem was $5.25 delivered from NextTag. shipping included).
Thanks very much for any help.

On edit: I had a zip drive installed on this at one time which is now obsolete. The message I see says, "Select the way you would like Iomega Active Disk to prompt you when you insert a disk."
There are 4 choices the last one being "Turn off active disk". I selected this one and still get the message when it boots up.

I'm not sure what this is -- do I do this in the safe mode?
As I posted below, I can live with this but it would be nice not to have to look at it.
Thanks for your help.

(41,694 posts)I saw an old Compaq not too long ago. Had Windows 95 on it. Worked fine, she uses it for checking her text only email and word processing and it does what she wants out of it just fine.

(20,878 posts)I'm still seeing the same two messages when I reboot:
1. Iomega
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
You click ok.
Then you get the next one:
2. Iomega
The system cannot find the file specified.
You click ok and it goes away.
I can live with this as the laptop works a lot better now and doesn't grunt and groan the way it had in the past.
Is this a concern?
I cannot install my external HD to it either being it has Windows 2000 on it. Shoot!
Maybe I should have kept that old zip drive?
On edit again: I do have a CDRW swapped into this laptop that does work.
I really don't need a zip drive come to think of it.
The one I had was an Iomega, that much I remember.

(18,482 posts)Start -> Run... "devmgmt.msc" <enter>
Check under "Disk drives" and "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" to see if you can find and delete the Iomega device.
Good luck.

I wish I'd kept the installation disk. Oh well ...

(14,478 posts)First thing to try is "nicely" removing Active Disk - The uninstall may still be kicking around, and this will be neater. See http://www.iomega.com/ap/support/documents/10802.html for the required ritual.
Failing that, delete it from startup using msconfig. W2K doesn't come msconfig (argh) but you can download the XP version from http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm which also has the incantation.
AD2KClient.exe, ADService.exe, & ADUserMon.exe are three files names to look out for, but there may be others.
FWIW, I've run the techadvice copy of msconfig through virustotal and it smells ok, but proceed at your own risk...

(20,878 posts)I tried the first thing already (did not work). I even went so far as to copy the program files from my external HD and FTP'd them to my server. No luck.
Last try is your last option ... try at my own risk if I dare. *eek*
Note: This laptop had Windows 98 on it before I got it. I bought it used in 2000 on eBay and it has all sorts of oddities about it so ??? it is!
Thank you so much!

(20,878 posts)It is gone now thank you very much for your help and now I can use this laptop (which has been used very little).
It saves me a bundle not having to buy another laptop/camera!

(20,878 posts)I was ready to let it go BUT the cost of a new laptop/camera needed for a short period of time is too much.
I'm just glad I got her going again.
I can't believe that the original battery still charges up. The only thing I've replaced is the internal battery for approx. $5.00 and the ethernet modem card now.
Hoping for the best for this old A20m made in Mexico.
