Need some help with WinXP dvd codecs/decoder.

I've acquired a HP Compac dc5700 with XP Pro installed -to replace my POS free (not even worth that much) Dell-. It has a Pioneer DVD recorder included. I think this computer came from Europe in that the time was set for eastern Europe and the dvd was not set to USA.
When I try to play a DVD I get a message stating that I don't have the necessary codec to play. Upon further investgation the error message says I don't have a compatable decoder installed.
Can anyone help me find out which codec(s)/decoder I need, and where I might find it/them.
Thanks

(224 posts)you may find some help in the forum at this site (if you don't find it here):

Edited to add:
I'd stay away from the links for the driver scan. I'm suspicious whenever I see links like those. I can affirm that the codec packs work fine. I run Kaspersky Internet Suite and the antivirus program has never found anything in the codec packs.

(2,684 posts)in my searches and wondered if it would be what I needed. I'm going to work with VLC for now. I'll keep K lite in mind should I need it.

(3,539 posts)The K Light package should have come with two flavors, Basic and Extended. The Basic package will allow WMP to deal with almost anything you might run across Audio and Video. It will allow WMP to Handel even Flash and Quicktime Video.
For Audio almost anything, their are 1 or 2 formats it doesn't deal with however you're likely never to run across them.
Their are those that find WMP a bit crude. I find it THE most reliable player.
Another way you can go is SMPlayer
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/
This is also a fine player and their is a version that works well for Linux should you ever migrate to UBUNTU or something similar.
SMPlayer works well on both platforms.
If you're going to watching a number of movies you may also want to check into an AC3 Filter such as....
http://ac3filter.net/
I'll let them tell you why you may want it.
Did I mention one nice feature for these three packages. The price. Free. Donate if you care to.
By now you might be thinking I do not like VLC. Naaa. I just spit on the ground every time it's name gets mentioned.
This will make it play on anything.
