Never registered iPad, Now what?

I was given the iPad for Xmas last year and really don't use it. I have received e-mails from Apple to encourage me to register the product. Had set up user name and password but that is all.
Just got a message from Apple that my account is suspended.

Does the fact that I didn't register the product interfere with use? I tried this AM to go to the link on the email to register it and the link is not valid.

Am I out of luck? Is this registration really necessary?
It works fine and I never use it outside of home.

I wonder if this is just for guarantee purposes or if there is some other reason I have to register the iPad mini.

Thanks for guidance.

Edited to add: I received several other messages from Apple to register, I don't think this is phishing.

First, I'd check that this isn't a phishing scam. Denzil_DC Nov 2015 #1

Apple offer some advice on detecting phishing emails here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204759

It might also help if you copy and paste the "message from Apple" on this thread (blank out your own details, of course) - often a Google search on snippets of text can help identify spoofs and scams (one other giveaway is if there are typos or grammatical errors in the message).

Others here will no doubt be able to advise you on the account suspension if that's really what's happened, but if so, I imagine you'll need to contact Apple support.
