this is a computer and phone question

I am about to upgrade my phone. But I have a long text conversation on my current phone that I want to preserve. I tried to download an app on the phone that will offload text messages to gmail on my pc, but google play tells me that my device (phone) is not connected to google.

Any ideas what to do about this?

If it is an android phone are you normally able to download apps from the google play store? If not you may need to register your phone with google to download from them.

Are you trying to use SMSbackup as outlined in this link?

I will be upgrading to a Samsung Galaxy S5.

I have not downloaded any apps from the google play store --- I tried to download an SMS backup app but that's when I got the msg that my device was not connected to google.
