You should also make sure all old versions of java have been removed from your system.

uninstall it. No sense in feeding a bloated pig in the garage if you are not planning on playing with it once in a while.
If you do have a need to execute Java Applets, then by all means keep it up to date. Older versions have tons of security exploits.

Note: JavaScript and Java are not the same thing, even if they sound the same. Neither relies on the other and have nothing to do with one another.
