Question..Is updating Java safe and desireable?

It keeps asking, but I thought I would ask here. thanks for any ideas.

1. You should keep java updated since the updates are often to fix security problems discovered.

You should also make sure all old versions of java have been removed from your system.

2. If you do not use Java...

uninstall it. No sense in feeding a bloated pig in the garage if you are not planning on playing with it once in a while.
If you do have a need to execute Java Applets, then by all means keep it up to date. Older versions have tons of security exploits.

Note: JavaScript and Java are not the same thing, even if they sound the same. Neither relies on the other and have nothing to do with one another.
