Stamps to go up 14p at end of April

A first-class stamp will rise in price from 46p to 60p from 30 April after the regulator removed price controls on Royal Mail.

A second-class stamp will go up from 36p to 50p - some 5p below the top price allowed by Ofcom.

The regulator has allowed Royal Mail to set the price of first-class and business mail.

It claimed the future of the universal service was at "severe risk" without relaxing controls.

That's a 30% increase for 1st class, 38% for 2nd.

Given that people are already writing fewer letters, and using text and e-mail more, they may be killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

50p for a second-class stamp?

I've got 50 of those on envelopes from the days when mail was post marked at both sending office and delivering office - mainly Scotland to East Grinstead and most got delivered the next day !
