No full driving licence until 19: Ministers' plan to slash deaths caused by young motorists.

The driving age could be raised to 18 in an attempt to slash the death toll on our roads.

And young people could be forced to wait until they are 19 before they qualify for a full licence under radical plans being considered by ministers. Currently they can be driving independently at 17.

The plans could also see all motorists aged under 30 banned from giving their friends a lift or driving at night for 12 months after they pass their test.

The proposals, prepared for the Department for Transport, would also see new motorists face a lower drink-drive limit for a year, regardless of their age.

Long gone are the days of driving a Bond 3 wheeler, with a reverse blanking plate , on a motor bike license , at age 16. Practice reverse in a private car park, take your test and then off out to buy a proper car.

.... Interestingly enough, the highest priority road casualty stories in the North East region recently have mainly involved elderly drivers.

That's assuming they are in fact insured which seems suspect at times. The fine for driving without insurance is minimal compared with the insurance cost.

The police , while driving, check plates on their data base to confirm whether or not insured and stop cars accordingly particularly if the driver looks young.

.....then the best answer is to attend a hustings meeting at the next election.

I did so at the last election and I was the youngest person in the room by quite some distance. I was 30 at the time.

It was a room full of elderly people moaning about immigrants, despite the fact that this constituency is one of those with very few immigrants or non-white people living here.

If young people are not taking part in the democratic process, then they will be an easy target for the politicians, who will all pander to rich old people instead.
