....and denigrating the young is a familiar theme of dog whistle politics, making out that any success in exams is due to grade inflation, that they are not fit for employment and so forth.

Essentially he's talking to grouchy old farts who want to feel superior to the young, mainly because such people are much more likely to get out and vote.

So, after leaving school, this berk joined a club for rich people to trash commercial premises and pay for it afterwards. This is someone who should never lecture anyone about "character skills, the ability to get on with different people, to articulate yourself clearly, confidence, grit, self-control". Well, I suppose he had the confidence to say "screw you, peasants, you may be an adult running a business, but I've still got more money than you".
