The time has come for Theresa May to tell the nation: Brexit cant be done

Alastair Campbell has his say on the state of play in the Brexit negotiations.

"“I will also be publishing the sectoral advice papers we have received on the impact of Brexit on all aspects of our national life, so MPs can debate these fully. I know many of you think I might be ill. I feel a lot better now. Because what has been making me ill is the reality of which I have been certain more each day … that Brexit is a disaster, a potential catastrophe for our country. That my duty now is to steer the country to the only sensible decision I can see – a rethink, a change of course: not hard Brexit or soft Brexit, but no Brexit at all.”

Makes a lot of sense to me, though I would never have thought I'd be on the same page as Alastair Campbell.

I have a feeling that when Cameron called the referendum, he was arrogant enough to think people would vote to Remain in a walkover, and never thought things through properly. Why else would he have not set a figure, say a two-thirds majority either way, to make sure people would get what the majority really wanted? To risk having half the country unhappy was so stupid, but that's what's happening.

Never mind that of course the Europeans are going to make leaving as difficult as possible - they don't want to set a precedent.

But I'm not there - how does Campbell's scenario look from your perspective?

A deep recession is going to happen as the economy adjusts to tariffs.

Reversing the Brexit process would boost the UK economy, the international economic body, the OECD has said.

A new referendum or a change of government leading to the UK staying within the EU would have a "significant" positive impact on growth, the OECD said.

It also warned "no deal" would see investment seize up, the pound hit new lows and the UK's credit rating cut.

It said the outcome of the Brexit negotiations was hard to predict.
