John Prescott reveals his guilt at the 'illegal' Iraq War will haunt him for the rest of his life

by John Prescott

On Wednesday we finally saw the Chilcot Report.

It was a damning indictment of how the Blair Government handled the war – and I take my fair share of blame.

As the Deputy Prime Minister in that Government I must express my fullest apology, especially to the families of the 179 men and women who gave their lives in the Iraq War.

Chilcot went into great detail as to what went wrong. But I want to identify certain lessons we must learn to prevent this tragedy being repeated.

Your sorrow and guilt mean shit.

You, along with Blair and the American congress, failed to use your fucking brains. You failed to ask questions. You failed to ask for proof. Instead, you sent 179 British troops to their death, and our own craven politicians sent tens of thousands to their deaths or to live with horrific wounds. Your troops and ours committed war crimes. Our politicians and yours committed war crimes by giving those orders. We will be digging ourselves out of the financial turmoil for the better part of this century. You and your fellow politicians, together with ours, increased the turmoil on the Middle East exponentially and created the terror groups that are affecting Americans, Britons, and Europeans. So, I call bullshit on your guilt and sorrow. You, Blair, bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al belong behind bars.

Of course that's not an excuse. He could have done what Robin Cook did.

It's too late for all the people who were killed directly in the war, and for those who continue to be killed as a result of the resulting chaos and the terrorism that it sparked and enabled.

But perhaps it will be a lesson to our political leaders to occasionally think before they act, rather than being sorry later on (yes, I realize I'm sounding like a schoolteacher telling kids off, but they really do act like kids, and delinquent kids at that). Or maybe not. The last few weeks have demonstrated that most of our political leaders aren't CAPABLE of thinking before, or after, they act.
