Perceptions of history divided along linguistic lines

Young Quebecers see their province’s history as a litany of missed opportunities, humiliation and defeat at the hands of anglophones.

The prevalence of that vision among people age 15 to 25 is the main finding of a new book based on a 10-year survey of 3,475 students across Quebec.

“It’s not so much that the history of Quebec has been a long, painful ordeal,” Université Laval history professor Jocelyn Létourneau said of how young Quebecers view their history.

“It’s more that here was a society that had everything it needed to fulfill its destiny as a normal society, but it is stuck in a state of hesitation, of uncertainty, of frustration. Why? Because of others, namely the English.”
