Senate plans to probe CBC operations

OTTAWA — The Senate is planning a comprehensive review of the CBC’s role in Canadian society examining how it has used billions of dollars in government subsidies received over the years.

A Senate committee, led by Liberal Sen. Dennis Dawson, approved the review Tuesday, and it will be conducted through public hearings slated to begin in the coming months.

Dawson, noting that he had a preference for having the committee looking at some other issues such as rail safety or Montreal’s crumbling Champlain Bridge, said that the CBC review became more pressing in light of last week’s television deal that will cause the public broadcaster to lose advertising revenues from Hockey Night in Canada.

He also dismissed questions about whether the Conservative majority on the committee could drive the review to attack the public broadcaster, reflecting some well-known anti-CBC views from within Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s caucus.

To be scared. We are required to be agressive.

If CBC does not exist then who exists? Sun, Fox, just who? Who exists in Quebec? Just who. Well of course Sun.

Sit back and think. Who will carry the dream of confederation?

Vive le Quebec libre.

show where he had to make fun of Chretien all the time. And then the show got cancelled cause it was then so awful. They want to do stuff in the cloak of darkness and hate anything that brings the enlightenment to the masses. I want to ask them why? Why are you doing this? Why do you want to make the world in this dark image? Why not have a middle class? Why not mitigate the worst things in poverty? I don't even think the footsoldiers on the right know what and why they are social engineering the world. To what end? Why?

I hope the CBC reexamines the Offshore banking leaks, and cozies up to Greenwald and Snowden, they're going to need all the ammunition they can get.

If this becomes framed as a battle of secrecy vs transparency, corruption vs accountability, entitlement, and who best represents Canadian's interests, the Senate will go down in flames, hoisted by their own petard.
