I don't think it's healthy or honest to pretend that military action is always about defense.

But if you remember what happened to get us there, it's not surprising we ended up there. I don't think, at the time, there was any way out of participating without fully alienating the US. At the time, most people saw it as defending ourselves against terrorism. Of course that's not how it ended up but it doesn't diminish what Rick Mercer said.
