‘Bell of Batoche reunites all Métis people’

MONTREAL - At the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste building on Saturday, president Mario Beaulieu asked people to rise for the Métis anthem.

The drums began pounding a steady beat underneath a hypnotic chant, and a voice came in. “Peuples Métis, tu as bravé les lois, ton esprit fait la foi, peuple Métis, souviens-toi,” sings Jean-Marc Philippe Duval on the recorded track.

Around 20 people streamed in and out of the building for a morning conference put on by the SSJB, an organization founded in 1835 by Ludger Duvernay to promote the interests of the Québécois people.

The conference was organized to show solidarity with the French-Canadian Métis who are celebrating the return of an important piece of history.
