Wyoming tribes have month to petition Supreme Court
RIVERTON, Wyo. — Wyoming's two tribes have until March 7 to file a petition for the U.S. Supreme Court to review the Riverton boundary case.
Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor on Jan. 17 extended the deadline for the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes to file the petition.
The Ranger reports that such petitions to the high court are rarely accepted. The Supreme Court gets some 7,000 appeals annually and usually chooses to hear only about 100 cases.
The dispute centers on whether a 1905 agreement between the tribes and federal government to allow sale of reservation land to non-Indians actually changed the reservation boundaries.
