Wisconsin: ****Mining Bill Hearing Wednesday in the Capitol*** Please attend if you can!!

from my email ...

Mining Hearing Wednesday

Dear Scuba,

We’ve just learned that legislators will hold a hearing on the Open Pit Mining Bill at the State Capitol on Wednesday, January 23, from 9am to 9pm.

If passed, the Open Pit Mining Bill would let mining companies fill our lake beds, contaminate our drinking water, and dump toxic mine waste in wetlands and flood plains. Filling hearing rooms with people like you helped defeat the mining bill last session, and it can happen again.

Help protect Wisconsin’s waters and the health of our families by attending the hearing on Wednesday, January 23, and telling legislators NO to the Open Pit Mining Bill.

Coming to a hearing on a controversial issue like this is not easy and is time consuming. However, it is the best hope we have of turning legislators against this bill.

This could be your only chance to have your voice heard on the record in the fight against the Open-Pit Mining Bill! Join us in room 411 S. at the State Capitol this Wednesday!

I discovered a group on Facebook called Mining Jobs for Wisconsin Bus Tour. The have posted on various tea party pages offering free bus rides and free lunch.

From Wausau Tea Party FB page:

"The hearing for the mining bill is anticipated next week - exact date to be announced soon. Please consider attending and testifying at the hearing - bus transportation and lunch will be provided. Stay tuned for more details.

...that everything will be just fine, if we only allow the mine. Here's just one example. How could anyone not be swayed by this?

Who says that a good economy and a clean environment can't go hand in hand? This is a picture of a huge tailing pile near Hurley. Notice the sparkling clean (and delicious) water coming right out of the base of the tailings?

Here's my favorite, after a quick glance:

"Changing the environment does not destroy it; nature simply adapts and goes on, often enjoying a benefit from the changes made."

I guess they mean this kind of change:

I'm sure the fish are enjoying the benefit!

People wishing to weigh in but unable to attend must:
Email both Senator Tom Tiffany Sen.Tiffany@legis.wi.gov and Representative Mary Williams Rep.WilliamsM@legis.wisconsin.gov

Explicitly state you are REGISTERING your testimony for AB1 and SB1, you must indicate whether you oppose the bill or support the bill. (If you think the bill is bad, OPPOSE it)
You must send the email during the time of the hearing on Wednesday, January 23rd between 9 am and 9pm.
You can supply written testimony with your email. You need not be an expert on the bill to provide your opinion. Include your name and physical address.
Anyone registering this way should ask for a confirmation email so they know their testimony was received.

Rep.Lehmann@legis.wisconsin.gov

I've already done this. Not sure if it's vital but the facebook page where I got the info said to include lehmann as well the other two.

Copying and pasting from the FB page, it also said to make the subject line:

Subject line: TESTIMONY for AB1 and SB1

Interesting note at the end of the information, copying and pasting:

...the Chair of the Mining Committee, Sen. Tiffany announced last Friday at 4pm, that the ONE and ONLY HEARING on the bill will be on Wednesday, Jan. 23--VERY SHORT NOTICE--especially for the people from Northern Wisconsin.

Senator Bob Jauch (D) serves Wisconsin's twenty-fifth Senate District, comprised of Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron, Sawyer and Washburn counties and the townships of Beaver, Johnstown, and McKinley in Polk county. Senator Jauch’s district comprises most of Northwestern Wisconsin.

Today Senator Bob Jauch said: "Unfortunately I will only be able to participate tomorrow by phone, for a little while, as our daughter is getting married out-of-state. Senator Cullen and I asked Senator Fitzgerald to allow Senator Cullen to sit in for me during the hearing. He refused (saying) he would only allow a permanent change."

WHAT? Yes, Senator Tiffany scheduled the only hearing on the day when he knew Senator Jauch would be out-of-town to attend his daughter's wedding!

WHY? Why did Senator Fitzgerald say 'no' to a reasonable request? I'm surprised Fitzgerald didn't suggest that Jauch stay for the hearing and let Cullen stand in for him at the wedding to walk his daughter down the aisle.

But seriously, this game the repugnant Republicans are playing is designed to suppress the voice of the Wisconsin people. Don't let them get away with it. Let your voice be heard!
