Wisconsin's ALEC State Chair Seeks to Amend Constitution to Require ID at Polls

Despite two separate Wisconsin courts striking down the state's voter ID law as an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote, the state legislature's incoming Assembly Leader, Rep. Robin Vos, has pledged support for amending the state constitution to require ID at the polls -- despite hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents not having ID and no significant evidence of voter fraud in the state. Vos is the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) State Chair for Wisconsin; Wisconsin's voter ID law, like many of those introduced in recent years, echoes the ALEC "model" voter ID Act.

"The people's fundamental right of suffrage preceded and gave birth to our Constitution," Dane County District Judge Richard Niess wrote in his March decision striking down Wisconsin's voter ID law as unconstitutional. "Not the other way around."

Rep. Vos spearheaded the effort to pass the ALEC-inspired voter ID act in 2011. Courts blocked the law a few months later.

In a separate decision finding, the law violates the Wisconsin Constitution's express protections for voting rights. Dane County Judge David Flanagan said the state's strict voter ID requirement "tells more than 300,000 Wisconsin voters who do not now have an acceptable form of photo identification that they cannot vote unless they first obtain a photo ID card."

...the Wanker as the "Good Cop" half of a P.R. stunt. The article headline calls it a "mixed message" but it's really just another way to frame the issue to the right, with the Wanker staking out a position that redefines the "center" on this.

So that in a month or two or however long it takes, the "not a priority" position can lurch back to the right, and become the "reasonable" thing to do...

Gov. Scott Walker argued that ending election-day voter registration was not a priority on Wednesday, even as two of his Republican colleagues announced they were working on a bill to do just that.

The GOP governor last month told a gathering at the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum near Los Angeles that he supported ending the ability of people to register to vote at the polls. Walker said Wednesday he still supports the measure, but downplayed it and said opponents had turned it into a "ridiculous issue."

But half an hour later, Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) sent an email to all lawmakers saying he and Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) were writing a bill to end election-day registration and seeking co-sponsors for it. Capitol aides said it was the first email they had seen in which legislators are asking for people to sign on to bills for the next session.

"It looks like in the Republican Party of Wisconsin, the right hand doesn't know what the far right hand is doing," said incoming Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee).

Voter suppression is one of their main objectives--hence any and every means to achieve that goal will be popping up any & every moment.
