GOP-led Wisconsin Senate passes Democratic governor's legislative maps

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin's GOP-controlled Senate on Tuesday passed legislative maps that were proposed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers — a move that could ultimately prevent the liberal-controlled state Supreme Court from implementing maps that could be even worse for Republicans.

The plan now heads to the Assembly, which was expected to pass it later Tuesday. Once approved there, it would go to Evers, who last week promised to sign it into law.

The political stakes are huge in the presidential battleground state, where Republicans have had a firm grip on the Legislature since 2011 even as Democrats have won statewide elections, including for governor in 2018 and 2022.

This marks the second time in less than a month that the Legislature has tried to enact new Senate and Assembly boundaries before the court issues its order drawing the lines. Evers vetoed the Legislature's last attempt, which was based on maps he proposed but that made changes to protect Republican incumbents.
This time, the Senate passed the Evers maps without any changes to the lines. Republicans cast it as their best remaining option.
“We really have a gun to our head, quite frankly,” said Republican Sen. Duey Stroebel.

GOP realizes that if the Supreme Court draws the map, their lot will be even worse.

As far as D and R proportions I think this map is exactly the same as the one Evers vetoed. That’s the only reason I don’t think he is as gung ho about this one as he was when he first proposed it. We will see soon enough if I’m right though.

Another way of looking at it would be why would Evers approve this map (which is the same as the previous GOP gerrymander)when Dems could get a much better deal if they just let the state Supreme Court decide it?

They just can't bring themselves to pass maps legitimately.

I sense a game here. I suspect the Dems do, too. Why tf do they want to make this exception to cover the next few months only?

It's not that they can resign and then run under the old maps because they would still have to run in November anyway under Wisconsin election law. As for the state senators whose term extends until 2026, the WisSC gets to decide if these maps apply sooner no matter what's passed now. So far they haven't voiced interest in that.

It's like they just want to fuck with everything just to have something to run on that's not really a thing.

9. Not optimistic

Is this map the one from last year that was "the least of two evils"? If so, please veto.

This is my #1 state issue and we finally have a chance at fairness. Don't blow it.
