Brown County to accept $70,000 settlement for courthouse dome, try again next year
GREEN BAY - A $70,000 payout, and a fresh start.
Brown County supervisors elected that option Wednesday to deal with the tarnished copper dome atop their historic courthouse in downtown Green Bay.
The structure, which opened in the early 1900s, will be professionally cleaned of dark material believed to be mildew, and coated with an as-yet-undetermined sealant designed to preserve its shine.
Sealing work won't be done before the county celebrates its 200th birthday this fall, but likely will take place next spring, Public Works Director Paul Fontecchio said.
The board agreed by voice vote to accept the payout from the Chicago engineering firm that had recommended the county coat the shined-up dome with boiled linseed oil. County officials later decided the coating contributed to the rapid, blotchy discoloration of the dome earlier this year.
