Paul Ryan embarrassed by constituents at fake town hall

House Speaker Paul Ryan hasn't held a traditional town hall open to the general public in nearly two years. But even with a hand-picked audience, the reception is still chilly — and angry.

House Speaker Paul Ryan is not what one would call “well-liked” these days.

As Shareblue’s Kaili Joy Gray put it, Ryan is “shockingly unpopular, even for Paul Ryan.”

A recent Bloomberg poll showed that only 34 percent of the American public have a favorable view of Ryan, which is both a sharp decline from the 47 percent who said so in December 2015, and which also manages to lag behind Donald Trump’s dismal polling numbers.

Perhaps those basement-level ratings are why Ryan has not held a traditional town hall since October 2015 — nearly two full years ago.

Ryan claimed the avoidance was because he doesn’t want “a screaming fest” — which says a lot about what Republicans think of their own standing in the eyes of the public.

If Ryan doesn’t want his constituents to scream at him, it might help if he stopped trying to take away their health care coverage and backing up the Trump agenda.

Instead, he has chosen to forgo public town halls in favor of engineered ones, where audiences are selected from the employees at businesses he visits. But even those hand-picked audiences are decidedly unhappy with Ryan and the GOP, and they aren’t shy about letting him know it.

During a recent “town hall” at the Banker Wire manufacturing company in Wisconsin, Republican employees in the audience gave Ryan an earful.

meaning it's dawning on them that a government full of Republican thieves and prima donnas will never be able to govern, at all.

This is a good thing. I hope it continues.

Maybe he'll suffer, similar to Foley in 1994 (Speaker, D Eastern Washington).

Ryan is another leader who benefited from from russian involvement/hacking. Yet, does nothing against them. His actions are similar to pRezident dRumpf.

He can't have a town hall meeting. Afraid of public out cry.

Yet, he and his family benefited from public welfare. He wants to cut social welfare programs!

their civil rights, their minimum food allotments, their democracy.

At the same time he will use those savings to cut taxes for the richest of us.

If we could just realize that sacrificing more to the Uber-Class will make us all better off.

How can anyone vote R and think they'll actually be better off? They've been hell-bent on stripping rights and enriching their wealthy cronies for decades, yet they keep voting for these hucksters. Wise up for gods sake!

I hope they know an empty suit when they see one and vote for Randy "Iron Stache" Bryce in 2018.

When Trump was still just running for President, I asked a friend of mine how he would explain to his mixed race child that he voted for Trump.

His response was to ask me how I was going to tell my daughter that i voted for Hillary and had she won, I could have aborted her.

Of course I said that I would love to tell my daughter I had a choice to have her or not and chose not to. It would be kind of difficult to tell an aborted child that I voted for Hillary and chose to abort her because I could. The argument just does not make any kind of sense I could find, nor are the two issues equivalent in nature. But that is how they think. They will support any candidate, no matter how insane, just on the off chance that they take away women's rights to their bodies.

There is no thinking or reasoning with people like that. That relationship of 40 years ended with that discussion and no regrets here.

I think the question we desperately need to find the answer to is how do you get them to think for real instead of whatever it is they are doing now. I would think we could use something from the playbook of rehabilitation from cult membership since that is tantamount to what they are doing.

They also are scared to death of the future. They feel powerless in the face of the inevitable change (we had a black president, for chrissake!) so someone like Trump comes along and promises to take care of them and keep them safe and they just fall into line. Once committed to that person, there is nothing that they can do which will change the True Believer's mind. "I can shoot a person on Fifth Avenue and not lose a voter."
