Demise of state treasurer's job next goes to voters
A 68-31 vote in the state Assembly on Thursday set the stage for voters to decide next year whether to amend Wisconsin’s Constitution and eliminate the state treasurer’s office.
Republican sponsors of the proposal say the office is a meaningless relic that has been perpetuated because it is in the state Constitution.
Opponents maintain that an elected treasurer helps balance power within the executive branch, protects state funding for public school libraries and — before lawmakers and the governor stripped the office of almost all its duties — was an independent watchdog over public funds.
One of the amendment’s lead authors, Sen. Dan Feyen, R-Fond du Lac, has said the change would streamline state operations and make them more modern while assuring the public that the lawmakers were good stewards of tax dollars.
