There is a lot of reason to ask questions about why the Republicans who control the state Legislature are using taxpayer dollars to hire private lawyers to represent them in a lawsuit challenging the state’s legislative district maps.

Questions like: How much will the lawyers cost, and where in the budget are their fees coming from?

That Republicans feel comfortable providing little response to those questions is further proof that in American politics, shame is so last century.

A three-judge panel was just confirming the obvious when in November it deemed the Republican- created maps an unconstitutional gerrymander.

Democrats have won more votes in Assembly races since the maps took effect than their paltry total of Assembly seats would imply. In fact in 2012, their Assembly candidates won 174,000 more votes than the GOP’s, and yet they ended up with only 39 of 99 seats.

Republican lawmakers are also not named as defendants in the suit. That honor goes to the state’s Elections Commission, which is represented by the state attorney general’s office......................
