Prison ordered for Green Bay tax preparer

GREEN BAY - A former tax preparer was sentenced to 30 months in prison for perpetrating a pair of tax fraud schemes.

Moises Alcazar, 34, was also ordered to pay $766,400 in restitution and have an additional year of supervision after his prison term ends, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday.

Alcazar plead guilty in October to assisting and advising in the preparation and filing of false income tax returns while operating his business, Alcazar Tax Services in Green Bay, from 2006-2012.

As part of a plea agreement, Alcazar acknowledged running a pair of related tax fraud schemes involving 128 false tax returns and resulting in a loss of $766,400 in tax revenue for the federal government.

I once worked at a company that hired a “newbie” reporter, whose first (and only) transcript was beyond hysterical. One of the exchanges was (reportedly) as follows:

Q. Do you use an accountant, or do you prepare your own taxes?

A. No, I always use a Professional Tax Repairer.

(The reporter even capped the words – as though he thought it was a professional designation.)

I never see the term “tax preparer” without thinking of that.

But it looks like the guy in this news story “repaired” one tax return too many.
