Closed in 1987, Genoa nuke plant preparing for demolition

Nearly 30 years after it stopped producing power, Dairyland Power Cooperative’s nuclear energy plant in Genoa is entering the final stretch of decommissioning.

Earlier this year, Dairyland turned over the license for the La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor to a private company under contract to remove the facility adjacent to Dairyland’s Genoa coal-fired plant.

The project is expected to cost about $85 million. As of last year, Dairyland had about $94.7 million in its nuclear decommissioning trust fund.

Brian Rude, Dairyland’s vice president for external and member relations, said the project, while expensive, will eliminate a major liability for the La Crosse-based cooperative.
