Related: About this forumUS DOJ will monitor today's elections in Wisconsin
http://www.bluecheddar.net/?p=20322The United States Department of Justice issued a press release Monday indicating they plan to monitor the April 3rd primary election in Wisconsin:
WASHINGTON The Justice Department announced today that the Civil Rights Division will monitor the election on April 3, 2012, in Milwaukee. The monitoring will ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and other federal voting rights statutes. The Voting Rights Act prohibits discrimination in the election process on the basis of race, color or membership in a minority language group. In addition, the act requires certain covered jurisdictions to provide language assistance during the election process. The city of Milwaukee is required to provide assistance in Spanish.
Justice Department personnel will monitor polling place activities in Milwaukee. Civil Rights Division attorneys will coordinate federal activities and maintain contact with local election officials.
Each year, the Justice Department deploys hundreds of federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management, as well as departmental staff, to monitor elections across the country. To file complaints about discriminatory voting practices, including acts of harassment or intimidation, voters may call the Voting Section of the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division at 1-800-253-3931.
There is no indication that confusion about Wisconsins new photo id law influenced the decision to send federal observers, but the law was recently halted by state courts in two separate lawsuits. Both decisions have been appealed by the Wisconsin Attorney General to the State Supreme Court, but it appears that the photo id requirement will not be in effect for the April 3rd election.

(36,063 posts)1. I voted today and wasn't asked only for my name
they read my address to me, all I had to do was say 'correct.'
The important thing for me was a referendum on whether the city should cut in half the number of aldermen.
The recreation aspect of it was encouraging Santorum to stay in the race and waste more republican money.
I've been answering "Gingrich" on telephone polls for the past 2 weeks. In the end, Newt's campaign announced
they were cutting back spending--so he lost my vote.
I refuse to vote for a cheap skate quitter!
