MADISON (WKOW) -- The 1,000 jobs being eliminated with the closure of the Oscar Mayer plant account for the second-largest layoff announced in Wisconsin this year.
It is part of a larger, statewide trend.
Wednesday's announcement by Heinz-Kraft means there will definitely be more than 10,000 layoff notifications sent to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development in 2015, the most since the Great Recession.
It will also mark the highest number of layoff notifications sent out during Gov. Scott Walker's (R-Wisconsin) administration, with the previous high of just over 9,000 coming in 2011 - his first year in office.
From 2012-2014, the state averaged roughly 6,500 layoff notifications per year, before skyrocketing in 2015.
Oscar Mayer sits in Rep. Chris Taylor's (D-Madison) district. She told 27 News something has to change.
"We're on pace to double the layoffs from last year and it's totally unacceptable," said Rep. Taylor. "And in this body, in the state legislature, we need to really get serious - these Republicans need to get serious about job creation and job retention."
But DWD Secretary Reggie Newson has repeatedly pointed to Wisconsin's low unemployment rate as a sign the job market here is strong.....................

Between Nabisco and Kraft, I am thoughly disgusted by these companies. And I doubt there will be food safety inspections in these Mexican plants. I plan to never buy from these companies again.
