Here in Wisconsin there was a lot of gnashing of teeth after Democrats were only unable to unseat two Republicans in the recall elections held last summer. Three seats were needed to "flip" the State Senate, giving Democrats the majority and control of committees and legislation coming from that body.
But the two wins were huge, leaving the Repukes with a narrow 17-16 seat margin, and Republican Dale Schults of Richland Center sided with the Democrats refusing to cave in on the "mining bill".
The result is that Gogebic Mining is going to take their shovel and go home! Without a law allowing them to destroy our environment with impunity they aren't willing to pursue the mine! Had the mine gone forward, no future legislation would ever be able to undo the damage.
So, for anyone who suggests we "lost" by not unseating more Republicans, I say this is one damn fine victory! While Mr. Schultz deserves credit for putting our State and People over his party and their special interests, it would not have been possible if not for the two Democratic victories in the recalls (Jessica King and Jennifer Schilling).
Now let's make sure the mine remains dead!

(4,949 posts)Mining companies will be salivating & right back at us if they think they can "sneak" in & rob our land.
Iron ore deposits mean nothing to them but a big DEPOSIT in their off shore bank accounts.
Also I read that some of the miners were to be brought in from Minn. as they are out of work now, but that
is not provable because Gogebic changes it's story left & right. So the short term 700 jobs would not
really help WI workers that much.

They might be ALEC moles, but I'd bet those five senators aren't suicidal.
