Charlie Burton dances and teaches flatfoot dancing. Here is a scene from North River Mills Day in Hampshire County, WV. An Oldtime string band is playing Arkansas Traveler on the porch of Miller's Inn.

The state legislature, in special session tonight, passed an education omnibus bill despised by every teacher in the state. The bill allows charter schools, education savings accounts, tax breaks for organizations that donate funds for student fees for attending private and parochial schools.

I have not yet seen if the House version of the bill included the state senate's draconian anti-union stance - a teacher can be fired for walking off the job, for striking, for even taking a sick day when a walkout is scheduled.

There are many more teachers, bus drivers and school personnel than coal miners in West Virginia. If you have paid attention to national news over the last year or so, the West Virginia teachers' strike has inspired teachers' groups across the country. There are about 20,000 teachers in the state; thousands drove to the state capitol to lobby, to watch the legislature, and to make their voices heard. There were striking teachers picketing in every single one of the 55 counties.

Local blogs and other online groups are blowing up tonight. The election of 2020, especially the election for the state house and senate, could be a very big surprise for those who think that the state is full of southern conservatives!

it's distressing to see this happening. The charter movement is all about taking public school funds, privatizing education and breaking the strength of the teachers and the public school system as reports show.

Many charters, all over the country have turned out to be nothing but a scam--with shoddy inferior 'schools,' utilizing uncertified, lower paid staff and supplies, and making $. Everyone will suffer in time- the kids, school personnel, families and communities.

Teachers have provided invaluable services to West Virginia for generations; and the education system employees are a large part of the workforce there. This frontal attack to set up private schools is meant to tear all that down.

2020 can't get here fast enough!!

I visited Hawk's Nest. Just a wild Ohio teenager and beer buzzed friends. It was in the the sixties.
Fantastic cliff. From the cornfields in Ohio to a patriotic heaven. We volunteered for the Draft
and Vietnam. Stupid!!!

did you stop by the Mystery Hole?

It's one of those old school tourist traps, with rooms that defy gravity and water that flows up hill. Great but silly fun!

Was it there in 1966? Plus we were broke.

Our heritage was from W.Va. So we got in the old
53 Buick with a case of Black Label and just headed
south on Rte 60 from Vermilion. Back in those
days a case could last all day. Strange thing was
lack of money, but we always managed to scrounge
up a few bucks. I am now bewildered on how we made
these excursions without cell-phones and maybe ten
bucks backup.

the Mystery Hole opened in 1972, closed in 1996, and reopened sometime in the 21st century.
