West Virginia lawmakers advance bill to rein in state vehicles
Delegate Pat McGeehan, R-Hancock, asked what he thought was a simple question at a legislative meeting Wednesday: How many vehicles does the state own?
“In earnest, I have no idea,” answered Adam Fridley, a legislative auditor who’s been reviewing West Virginia’s fleet of state-owned vehicles for months.
In an attempt to answer that question, state lawmakers advanced a bill (HB 2004) that would create an inventory of all state-owned cars, trucks and SUVs. The legislation also aims to reduce the size of the state government fleet and stop state employees from using the vehicles for personal reasons.
“We know there are a lot of abuses in the system,” said Delegate Gary Howell, R-Mineral. “Once this is implemented, we can track the vehicles.”
