Sewage Spills In Seattle, Renton: 4.5 Million Gallons Released
SEATTLE, WA Two separate spills at major treatment plants in Seattle and Renton resulted in millions of gallons of untreated or only partially treated sewage leaking into Puget Sound, according to the state Department of Ecology.
A 3 million-gallon spill happened early Friday morning at the West Point treatment plant in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood. That spill happened during a power outage, which caused backup systems to fail. Sewage flowed into Puget Sound for 27 minutes.
On Thursday, a power failure at Renton's treatment facility sent 1.5 million gallons of partially-disinfected sewage into Puget Sound. That plant's outflow pipe empties into the sound about two miles northwest of the head of the Duwamish River.
"Ecology is investigating both incidents as unauthorized discharges that would violate the states water quality permits for the facilities. The county reported the incidents to Ecology. Ecology anticipates taking necessary enforcement actions after its full investigation," the Department of Ecology said in a statement Friday afternoon.
