Put Down That Phone! WSP Begins Distracted Driving Emphasis

SEATTLE, WA — Want to save $136 (or $234, depending on your driving record)? All you have to do is put down the phone.

A Washington State Patrol distracted driving emphasis patrol begins on June 21 and will last throughout the weekend. Troopers will be out in force across the state handing out fines to violators — and maybe preventing some injuries or deaths.

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, distracted drivers cause 30 percent of traffic fatalities, and 23 percent of serious injury crashes.

Washington had 154 distracted-driving deaths in 2016, the most recent year the data was available. The good news: the traffic safety commission says distracted driving rates have dropped from 10.2 to 7 percent in King County.
