King County Labor Council ditches Sawant, endorses DeWolf

Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant has lost the support of the Martin Luther King County Labor Council, a bulwark of the militant socialist's successful 2015 reelection campaign.

The labor council voted Wednesday night to endorse District 3 challenger Zachary DeWolf, a member of the Seattle School Board and LGBTQ activist.

"Union members have made it clear that Zachary DeWolf is the candidate that best represents the working class in District 3," said Nicole Grant, secretary-treasurer of the labor council. DeWolf carried the endorsement with 74% of the vote.

Sawant responded in kind, with a statement depicting her labor opposition as corporate dupes. "It's unfortunate that, intentionally or not, a section of labor leaders have made a decision that will effectively further embolden Amazon and the Chamber of Commerce, rather than stand with the interests of working people."

Sawant has undertaken a series of stands that have angered some in labor.

She has been a noisy opponent of Puget Sound Energy's Tacoma methane project. She was the lone council vote against ratification of the City of Seattle's new contract with the Seattle Police Officers Guild. Union ironworkers disrupted a Sawant demonstration against Amazon during debate over the proposed corporate head tax.

In 2017, Sawant endorsed at-large council candidate Jon Grant, running against labor official Teresa Mosqueda. Mosqueda won. She has become a strong supporter of DeWolf in this year's Council election.
