Woodland Park Zoo Jaguar Dies At Age 20
SEATTLE, WA A geriatric jaguar living at Woodland Park Zoo was euthanized last week after he developed health problems due to old age, zoo officials have said. Junior, 20, has been living under medical care out of public view since 2017.
The zoo said Junior suffered a "major decline in health and quality-of-life" recently. Veterinarians suspected that he suffered a stroke in 2017. Jaguars typically only live to about age 18 in captivity.
"He was a great cat who brought our Jaguar Cove habitat alive with his stealth and masculinity," Woodland Park Zoo animal care manager said Erin Sullivan said in a statement. "Our animal keepers did an amazing job of maintaining a good quality of life for Junior, despite his physical limitations over the last year and a half. He lived a long, enriched life and well really miss him."
Junior came to Woodland Park in 2005 from a zoo in Bolivia. He had three cubs with Nayla, 13, who is now the only jaguar living at Woodland Park Zoo. The zoo will perform a necropsy to determine Junior's exact cause of death.
